What is IRRIS

Background
IRRIS – originally developed for the U.S. Military – is a patented geospatial technology application of which portions have recently been Department of Defense (DOD) declassified. It was designed as a Web portal from which military personnel could access to obtain detailed, timely, and relevant information about road conditions, construction, incidents, and weather that might interfere with the movement of people and goods from forts to ports.

At its foundation, IRRIS uses commercial Web-based geographic information system (GIS) software, advanced information technology (IT), and other technology to integrate and display information from nearly 400 different sources. These sources include current transportation infrastructure data (such as data on roads, bridges, and tunnels); near-real-time information (including weather, traffic, and construction reports); along with data on assets critical to security (such as airports, dams, water plants, commuter rail lines, and nuclear power plants).

This innovative approach to tie together infrastructure information and other live data that might interfere with the movement of goods – and display the data in a map format – gave military users the tools to effectively organize and track military cargo. With a click of the mouse, transportation engineers, logisticians, and specialists throughout the DOD could zero in on the location and content of any military shipment or cargo being transported by road, rail, or ocean carrier throughout the world.

Since its foundation in the DOD, IRRIS has developed into a sophisticated and mature multi-component display, reporting, and analysis system that serves clients in many federal and state agencies, as well as the commercial and private sectors. From the beginning, IRRIS was purposely designed to easily integrate live and static data from a variety of sources. This flexible technology framework makes it possible to customize IRRIS for a variety of uses and clients in many industries and disciplines.
